Shriver Coat of Arms
On a search of the internet for Shriver related genealogical sites
I stumbled upon the web page of George Shriver.
Although there was no genealogical info he did have a Shriver Coat of Arms on his site. I
e-mailed him to find out the origin of the Coat of Arms and this was his e-mail response:
Rayna,
My father, whom has been dead for a number of years, searched the "Rietstap
Armrial General" records back in the early 40's. I think he was just
gathering Shriver information. However, during his search he came across these words
listed in some obscure section of those records. "D'azur a trois los.
d'or." He
had no idea what these words meant, but he wrote them down anyway. A few years back, I
don't remember the exact date, I once again came across some of my fathers notes while in
the process of a move. My interest peeked, so I visited the library at Rice University in
Houston one day to see what I could find. There a clerk directed me to the school's
language department where an assistant professor was quit willing to help me. I explained
how I had came by these words and within minutes he had dung out some of the oldest
looking books I think I have ever seen. He informed me that the words were that used by
"heraldic artist of old" who often design family coats of arms. He was unable at
that time to tell me what the words said, but he called me at work a few days later. He
explained that an associate of his in California was able to translate the words to
roughly mean. "Blue, three gold diamonds". Thus, the shield that you see on my
web site is of my own design, using those words.
Is it official? I have no idea. But its good enough for me. You are perfectly welcome to
use the design if your so desire, and pass it on to whom every you like.
You might be interest to know that a family motto or, battle cry was often associated with
the coat of arms. If there is one for the Shrivers, I know not what it might be. But if
someone in the family should know, please forward it to me. If one does not exist, then we
should develop one, since a Shirver has served with distinction in every major war that
this country has fought. From the Revolutionary War, Civil War, both World Wars, Korea to
Vietnam. By the way... my father's name was: George Fred Shriver. My middle initial
"M" is for Marion. My father's father brought his family to Oklahoma territory
from Missouri, settling in Bartensville. I was born in Tulsa and currently reside in
Muskogee.
Please let me know what you think.
George
